Hamels probably a little less baffled by his early hook this time around

Cole Hamels couldn’t get it going in the cold and rain last night, allowing six runs in 4 2/3 innings as the Mets topped the Phils 6-1.

He walked four the fourth inning, including the New York pitcher with the bases loaded.

The Phillies had five hits in the game and scored their lone run on a Byrd homer in the fourth.

On the good news front, the bullpen was outstanding. Four Phillie relievers combined to throw 4 1/3 scoreless innings in which they allowed one single and no walks. Mario Hollands was particularly impressive coming off of an ugly outing last week, setting down all six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh.

The Phillies are 13-13 on the year after losing 6-1 to the New York Mets last night. The Mets lead the two-game series one game to none. The Phils have allowed 15 more runs than they’ve scored for the season and are fortunate to be .500.

They’re 6-3 over their last nine games. Despite just three runs in their last two games, they’ve scored 42 runs in their last nine overall, which is about 4.67 runs per game. They’re fifth in the 15-team NL in runs scored per game and 14th in runs allowed per game.

Hamels got the start for the Phillies and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and five walks. Two of the hits went for extra-bases, both doubles. He struck out three.

Two starts for Hamels on the year, one good and this one, which was awful. 6.75 ERA and a 1.88 ratio for the season in 10 2/3 innings. Hasn’t allowed a home run yet, but opponents are hitting .341 against him and he’s walked six. He walked five or more in a start twice in his 33 starts in 2013.

He allowed a one-out single to Daniel Murphy in the top of the first, but got David Wright and Chris Young behind Murphy.

Curtis Granderson started the second with a single to right, but Hamels got Josh Satin to ground into a double-play behind him and Travis d’Arnaud grounded to second for the third out.

The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Ruben Tejada led off with a double down the third base line and scored on a two-out single by Murphy. Ruiz made a nice play for the third out. With Murphy on first, a ball in the dirt got away from Ruiz. Murphy tried to take second, but Ruiz made a strong throw to nail him and set New York down.

Hamels walked Young and Granderson back-to-back with one out in the fourth. Satin followed with a single to center. 2-0 with runners on the corners. Hamels struck d’Arnaud out swinging for a big second out, but then walked Tejada to load the bases and the pitcher Jon Niese to force Granderson in from third. 3-0. Eric Young grounded to Utley to end the frame.

Hamels walks four batters in an inning for the first time in his career. He walked the pitcher Niese with the bases loaded to force in a run in the frame.

The lead was cut to 3-1 when he started the fifth. Murphy led off with a single, stole second and scored on a one-out double by Young. 4-1. Granderson grounded to first for the second out before Hamels hit Satin. Two outs and men on first and second. d’Arnaud was next and walked on five pitches, loading the bases for Tejada. Tejada blooped a single into center, scoring Young and Satin. 6-1 with runners on first and second. Hernandez came in to pitch to Niese and struck him out looking to set New York down.

Hernandez makes his first appearance in relief for the Phils with his scheduled start on Friday expected to be skipped. He has a 5.74 ERA and a 1.54 ratio for the season.

Hollands threw a 1-2-3 sixth and a 1-2-3 seventh, striking out Murphy in the sixth and Granderson in the seventh.

Fantastic outing for Hollands, coming of an April 23 appearance against the Dodgers in which he was charged with two runs in two-thirds of an inning. 3.27 ERA and a 1.00 ratio for the year for the lefty. Opponents are on-basing .262 against him for the year.

Jeff Manship threw a 1-2-3 eighth.

First of nine appearances on the year for Manship in which he gets more than one out without allowing a hit or a walk. 5.87 ERA and a 1.70 ratio for the year. He’s walked five in 7 2/3 innings. Righties are hitting 318/423/500 against the righty in the early going.

Shawn Camp pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing a leadoff single to Young, but getting Murphy on a fly ball to center before Wright grounded into a double-play.

Second appearance for Camp with the Phillies. He allowed three hits in 1 2/3 innings but has not been charged with a run.

Fantastic day for the pen as four relievers combine to throw 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing a single and no walks while striking out three.

Hollands threw 30 pitches in the game. The other three relievers were all under ten.

The Phillie lineup against lefty Jon Niese went (1) Ben Revere (2) Jimmy Rollins (3) Chase Utley (4) Marlon Byrd (5) Ryan Howard (6) Carlos Ruiz (7) Domonic Brown (8) Jayson Nix. Nix at third with Asche on the bench. Byrd hits fourth with Howard fifth against the lefty. Playing someone other than Asche at third against a lefty is a pretty good idea. Nix isn’t the answer, though. Seventh is too low for Brown to be hitting against a lefty, especially when lefties Revere and Howard are in the lineup. In defense of the lineup, Brown has been atrocious at the plate recently.

The Phillies went in order in the first.

Ruiz walked with two outs in the second. Brown flew to left for the third out.

Down 1-0, the Phils went in order in the third.

They were down 3-0 when they hit in the fourth. With two outs and nobody on, Byrd hit an 0-1 pitch out to left. 3-1. Howard followed with a single to right before Ruiz grounded to second to end the inning.

Third home run of the year for Byrd and his second against a lefty. He’s hammering lefties to the tune of 360/407/640 and hitting 270/278/355 against righties.

The Phils didn’t have a base-runner in the fifth. Gwynn hit for Hernandez with two outs and nobody on and grounded to first to end the inning.

The lefty Gwynn hits against the lefty Niese.

Utley singled to center with two outs in the sixth. Byrd flew to right for the third out.

Ruiz singled to center with one out in the seventh. Brown and Nix both struck out looking behind him.

Nix is 1-for-19 against lefties on the year with nine strikeouts, so it’s a little weird if the Phillies think they’re going to an offensive boost playing him there over Asche against lefties. Nineteen at-bats don’t matter, but he also has a 236/310/393 line against lefties for his career. That’s probably better than what Asche is going to hit against lefties this year, but that doesn’t make it good.

Asche hit for Hernandez and drew a walk off of righty Daisuke Matsuzaka to start the eighth. Revere grounded to short with Asche forced at second for the first out. Rollins struck out for the second out before Revere stole second. Utley got second life when Young dropped a foul ball for an error during his at-bat, but flew to left to turn the Phillies away.

Howard doubled to left off of righty Jose Valverde with one out in the ninth. Ruiz and Brown went down behind him to end the game.

Revere 0-for-4 in the game. He has one extra-base hit in 100 plate appearances for the season. Came into last night’s game 14-for-his-last-33 (.424).

Rollins 0-for-4. 161/188/194 over his last 32 plate appearances. Hitting .226 against lefties and hasn’t walked against a lefty this season in 31 plate appearances.

Utley 1-for-4 to drop his average to .355. He’s hitting .355 against righties and .355 against lefties. Fourth in the NL in average, seventh in on-base percentage and ninth in slugging. FanGraphs has his UZR/150 at second at 17.2, which is the highest it’s been since 2008. He’s having a monster year.

Byrd 1-for-4 with his third home run. Hammering lefties and not hitting righties. 343/361/543 over his last 36 plate appearances.

Howard 2-for-4 with a double. 12-for-his-last-38 (.316) with five extra-base hits and a .579 slugging percentage.

Ruiz 1-for-3 with a walk. Made a nice throw to end the third. 12-for-his-last-25 with six walks, six extra-base hits and a 480/581/840 line.

Brown 0-for-4 with a strikeout and three men left on base. 204/245/224 over his last 53 plate appearances.

Nix 0-for-3 with a strikeout. 161/188/258 so far on the season.

Kendrick (0-2, 3.52) faces righty Bartolo Colon (2-3, 4.50) tonight. Lefties are hitting 350/409/575 and righties 253/278/391. So let’s hope the Mets think it’s a good night to rest their lefties. Colon allowed nine runs in five innings against the Angels on April 13. In his other four starts he’s thrown to a 2.33 ERA and a 1.04 ratio while walking one and striking out 23 in 27 innings.
